Police say a Muncie woman was arrested after asking a state trooper whether she could smoke — and then trying to light up a marijuana joint.
Thirty-two-year-old Honesty Knight was a passenger in a vehicle that Trooper Eric Perkins pulled over for a traffic violation early Friday. While the trooper was talking to the driver, Knight obtained the trooper’s permission to smoke.
Police say Perkins then asked to see the cigarette, which contained marijuana, not tobacco.
Knight faces a preliminary charge of possession of paraphernalia. She was released from jail on bond, but couldn’t be located for comment because no home telephone number was listed in her name.
The North Yungas Road, popularly known as El Camino de la Muerta or the Road of Death, is the only passage way to go to some of the outskirt villages in the Yunga region or the way out to La Paz in Bolivia. It is a road where engine condition doesn’t matter much. It is a road negotiated best by praying.
The 43 mile road has earned the reputation of being the planet’s most dangerous road according to the Inter-American Development Bank in 1995. Every year, it claims 200 to 300 lives on average. Every fatal accident is marked with the Christian symbol of Cross.

In 1881, Sarah Winchester, the widow of famous gun maker Oliver Winchester, became convinced that she needed protection from the evil spirits of all the people killed by Winchester rifles. A psychic advised her to continually add rooms to her San Jose, California, mansion to confuse any ghosts that may try to find her. (It’s not clear why ghosts, which can supposedly move through walls, would be confused by the rooms, but it apparently made sense to Winchester.) She did so for nearly forty years, adding more than 100 rooms and staircases, until her death in 1922. After Sarah’s death, her own ghost was said to haunt the halls of her mazelike mansion. Today the building remains a popular tourist attraction, a bizarre monument to superstition and paranoia.
The Amityville Horror
On Nov. 13, 1974, six members of an Amityville, New York, family were killed by one of the family’s sons, Ronald Jr. (â€Butchâ€) DeFeo. In his legal defense, DeFeo claimed that demonic forces in the home drove him to kill. The new owner of the home at 112 Ocean Avenue later claimed a variety of ghostly phenomena, and the story was further fictionalized into a best-selling novel and horror film. Yet the supernatural events were never proven, and DeFeo’s lawyer later admitted that the story was a hoax.

A stripper who danced on the poles of Santiago subway trains to challenge the prudishness of Chilean society has been arrested during one of her lightning performances.
Monserrat Morilles, 26, surprised subway riders all week stripping to skimpy underwear, but she refused tips.
She said she was protesting a lack of tolerance in Chile, one of Latin America’s most conservative societies where the first generation since the Pinochet dictatorship is reaching adulthood.
“This is just a beginning. We are starting an idea here that will grow and be developed further,†she told Reuters as police and subway guards surrounded her.

He’s wanted for bilking his former clients out of hundreds of millions of dollars.
Samuel Israel III pleaded guilty to stealing more than $450 million from his clients of Bayou Hedge Fund.
But did Samuel Israel III kill himself or fake his own death to escape a 20-year prison sentence? That’s what authorities in New York are trying to figure out after he disappeared this week.
Israel, who co-founded Bayou Hedge Fund, pleaded guilty in 2005 of stealing more than $450 million from his clients. For the past three years, he’s been out on bail and cooperating with prosecutors to help them recover some of the money.
He was supposed to report to prison Monday in Massachusetts to begin a 20-year sentence. Police said Israel left his home in Armonk, New York, about an hour outside Manhattan, about 9 a.m. and told his live-in girlfriend, “I’m driving to prison.”
Israel’s 2006 GMC Envoy was found about 12:30 p.m., parked on the Bear Mountain Bridge, high above the Hudson River in upstate New York. Authorities said the keys were in the ignition, but Israel was nowhere to be found.
In the heart of Mumbai’s red light district, several prostitutes sit on brown plastic chairs in a narrow room waiting to do something many have never been able to do before: deposit their savings in a bank. The small bank is the initiative of the women and aims to help them break the vicious cycle of poverty and exploitation that keeps them indebted to brothel owners. The simple act of squirreling away some money was previously out of reach for many customers of the Sangini Women’s Cooperative Bank. Prostitutes are often shunned by regular banks or lack residence documents or birth certificates officially required to open an account in India. Now, for the last three months, they have been able to enter the bank daily to deposit an average of 10 to 20 rupees (25 to 50 cents) and dream of things they will do as their savings grow. “We may not have house papers, but we also dream,” said Indra Jai, 40, who was lured from a southern village 20 years ago with promises of a job in Mumbai and then forced into prostitution. “We should get respect; our money is also good.”
An interesting solar invention was recently discovered in Thailand.
Sila Sutharat, a 50 year-old man dubbed the “solar manâ€, has invented a solar grill that uses solar energy to roast chickens.
Using specially design mirrors, the solar grill absorbs sunlight as energy and uses no additional fuels or energy source. It can cook a pre-marinated 3.5 pound chicken in about 10 minutes. Inspired by childhood experimentation with a magnifying glass, Sila cooks up to 50 chickens a day and sells them for around $5 each. The solar man’s grill is located 55 miles outside of Bangkok
